TJ Holowaychuk

When I was a few years into design I was playing around with Flash which led me to scripting. Later when I was doing design work for a local company in Victoria I decided that if I was going to do side work that I would like to be able to do every aspect so I started coding. As far as the “how” - nothing special really, I don’t read books, never went to school, I just read other people’s code and always wonder how things work.

David Heinemeier Hansson also didn’t start as a programmer, but as a gaming journalist. He wanted to get work done on his website faster, so he decided to pickup php and do it himself. In fact, he hated the idea of becoming a programmer in his early days. Back then it meant mastering C/C++ which he didn’t find interesting.

Douglas Crockford

He started in Television and abandoned it after learning the appeal of computer software. He was also self taught.
